BROOKLYN, NY — In a horrifying act of senseless street violence, a 7-month-old baby girl was fatally shot while sitting in her stroller on a busy Brooklyn sidewalk Wednesday afternoon, April 1, 2026 — struck down in broad daylight by a gunman firing from the back of a speeding moped.
The tragedy unfolded around 1:20 p.m. near the corner of Humboldt and Moore streets in the East Williamsburg/Bushwick area. The infant, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was being pushed by her mother when two suspects on a black moped approached. The passenger opened fire, squeezing off at least two shots toward a group of adults and children gathered on the corner.
One of the bullets — believed to be a stray round in what police are describing as a suspected gang-related targeted attack — struck the helpless 7-month-old in the head (or upper body, according to varying early reports). Her devastated parents rushed the child to nearby Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead just before 2 p.m. No other injuries were reported.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the shooting “a horrifying, senseless tragedy,” stating at a press conference: “A 7-month-old child being pushed in a stroller along a busy Brooklyn sidewalk was shot and killed in broad daylight.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani added: “A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant. There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now.”
Police say the moped sped away after the gunfire but later crashed into an oncoming vehicle. One suspect — the alleged shooter riding on the back — was quickly taken into custody. A massive manhunt remains underway for the driver of the moped, described as still at large.
The incident has once again spotlighted the plague of reckless gun violence on New York City streets, where innocent bystanders — including the city’s most vulnerable children — continue to pay the ultimate price for feuds between criminals. Authorities noted that several other young children and adults were present at the busy intersection when the shots rang out.
As of Wednesday evening, the motive appears tied to ongoing gang conflicts in the area, with the baby an unintended victim caught in the crossfire of cowards who chose to settle scores in public during the middle of the day.
